In 1987 the French Goverment communicated to ÅLS its wishes to raise a monument in memory of the 600-700 French soldiers that died on Åland during the Bomarsund conflict in 1854. When the site traditionally regarded as a French cemetery turned out to be empty, Museibyrån began searching for French burial grounds around Sund. The locals helped by pointing out possible sites - one of them Tranvik.
Human bones had been uncovered and reburied in connection with sand quarrying. A skull in situ was discovered by a partially disturbed sandpit wall.
The site was given priosity since it was known that French marines had landed and camped at Tranvik.
A total of 8 burials contained the skeletons of men 18-35 years old that had been buried in coffins. Both the cranial measurements and an Orthodox cross pendant suggest that they were Russians. The most suitable date for the massgrave appears to be the summer of 1743, when the Russian fleet lay camped at Ängösund c. 8 km away.
The Tranvik massgrave site appears to cover a fairly large area.
